What Is Your Artistic Voice
Finding your artistic voice not your artistic style.
This is something that has been on my mind lately, you may have noticed my work has changed recently. No, actually my work hasn’t changed my medium has, or better put, my mediums. I was feeling perplexed that by painting in other mediums I was not making progress towards finding and being known for my artistic style, the apparent wholly grail of being a professional artist!!!!
If I look critically back at my work I have an artistic voice, this very voice has been the centre of my whole career, flowers and the floral form. It doesn’t matter if I am painting on silk with dyes, gorgeous 640gsm paper with watercolours or a glass bauble with acrylic paint my artist voice is consistent and it is nature and flowers that always light me up.
From now on I will be painting in the medium that inspires me and yes I will paint other things than flowers but they will always be at the heart of all that I do. I love to stretch myself in my creativity, trying new colour pallets, changing the focal point but I think the floral form will always prevali. Yes I have favourites but honestly they are all so beautiful in every different way imaginable how would I choose.
Finding and realising my inner artistic voice has been a very personal journey. It is only now that I can sit with my thoughts and really be with them enough to truely understand what, makes me tick. And the realisation that flowers have been in my whole life since being mesmerised by the cute flowers shop in the main St where I grew up in Melbourne. When I admire other peoples work it is always nature that grabs my attention, that is my voice and something that will always be me.
