What to look for when buying original art…….

Things to consider when buying original wall art.

Buying art is a big decision and yes it is an investment. But starting your own art collection is an exciting adventure so here is some things to know before you part with your money.

Firstly consider your personal tastes and preferences and where it is going to be hung. Art is subjective, so choose pieces that align with your decor and evoke an emotional response. Next, assess the quality and craftsmanship of the artwork. Look for attention to detail, skilful execution, and use of high-quality materials

Original artwork should be created with artists quality paint and on a quality surface like paper or canvas. Artists quality paints have a lightfastness rating this insures the artwork won’t fade over time. Quality painting surfaces are also prepared before the painting starts to ensure the paint stays on the canvas. On completion the artwork is sealed and/or varnished to protect it. How to tell if it is ‘well made’….. This is tricky especially when buying on the internet but do your research on the artist, look at their other work, do they have testimonials from happy clients? And how professional are they portraying their work and themselves.

If the artwork is framed it should be framed professionally using uv protected glass archival quality backing board, mat boards and tapes. This will protect the artwork within a control ph balanced environment. Technical yes, but a professional picture framing will do this for you. Usually the artist would have a preferred picture framer who they have worked with before or they can advise you of how to choose a framer close to you.

An original artwork would be signed by the artist and its name written on the back of the artwork. It will be accompanied by a Certificate Of Authenticity. This shows you the artworks name, medium (what it is painted with) surface (what it is painted on) date painted and their signature. Sometimes a blurb is included (an artist statement) from the artist about the artwork, the story behind it and their inspiration for the piece.

When you own a piece of original artwork you do not own the copyright to it. The artist will always have the copyright ownership of it. The artist can therefore sell prints and use the digital copy of the artwork however they desire. You however own the very valuable original artwork that will become more valuable as the artist evolves in their creative career. Your piece will also grow in value the more it is showcased in this way. There is and will only ever be 1 original, your original that you own forever.

Nothing compares to original art, it has texture and life to it. The alternative is art reproductions and these, if done well, have exceptional quality but will never replace original artworks for their look texture and the feel they evoke.

Owning original art is an honour, starting an art collection is exciting.  Start with a small piece, buy what is within your budget and know that the artist will be forever grateful that you loved their creation.
